Review
Music for Kettledrums is an excellent addition to the small number of solo pieces with ensemble accompaniment. Written for four drums, the piece opens with a solo statement by the timpani. The solo includes numerous meter changes and requires some independence of playing near the center with one hand while playing in the normal playing area with the other. All pitch changes are clearly indicated. There are a few rapid tuning changes as well as audible and inaudible glissandi on specific pitches. The accompanying ensemble is a percussion quartet consisting of three mallet players and one multiple percussionist. Player 1 requires some three-mallet techniques and xylophone and player 3 has some four-mallet marimba pasages. This is a grade 4 solo and is highly recommended for the small college ensemble.
