Emerald Isle is inspired by the true story of a wildfire in Peshtigo, WI on Oct. 8, 1871, the most devastating fire in U.S. history, killing between 1,200-2,400 people and burning 1.2 million acres. The extremely dry conditions and high winds created a fire storm that roared across the countryside like a tornado. People desperate to escape the fire fled to a nearby chapel where others were praying. After hours of horror and suspense, rain finally extinguished the fire. Tongues of fire had reached the chapel fence, leaving char marks on the outside of the fence as mementos. The only green that could be seen for miles was on the chapel grounds, an “Emerald Isle” in a sea of ash.
In life we can sometimes feel as if we’re going through a firestorm. If we hold fast to each other and stand firm in goodness and truth, often situations will resolve themselves in the most unexpected ways, and sometimes even miracles can occur.
Emerald Isle was commissioned by Dawn McConkie and Buffet Crampon. The premiere will be given by Dawn McConkie and Tracy Freeze at ICA 2024, fittingly on the “Emerald Isle” in Dublin.
