Program Notes
Lamplighters was sparked from a line spoken by Gonzo in "The Muppet Christmas Carol:" “Once again, it was Christmas Eve. Night was falling, and the lamplighters were plying their trade.” I thought about the work of a lamplighter, trudging through the snow as the sky grows dark, collar pulled high against the cold. The quiet responsibility of lighting the streets on Christmas Eve, surrounded by the echo of ringing church bells. Knowing everyone else has gathered in warmth and laughter must carry a lonely weight, yet a strong sense of pride and purpose. The piece pulls from this imagery, from an ominous accordion layered over a serene marimba chorale, to the clock striking midnight, and the poignant push into Christmas day.
