Program Notes

Japauken is a compound word: “Japan” and “Pauken” (the German word for timpani; the translation) 1st movement “Small Dance”: The imaginative rhythmic accompaniment is based on japanese folk music traditions and is to be played with wooden sticks.
2nd movement “Song”: The first half is to be played with a feeling of loneliness and full of expression. At “più mosso” play only a little faster, the left hand should not be too heavy.
3rd movement “Fete”: Play the beginning Cadenza ad libitum, but with a feeling of loneliness. Following this, the melody should be expressed rhythmically.
