Program Notes
Motion No. 7 by Nicholas Hall is the final work in the Motion series for percussion duo. Like the other works in the series, the piece challenges two individuals to act as a single unit, with each player performing separate sections of the primary and secondary material to create a cohesive whole. The main structure and motives of this work are built on 5:4 and 4:3 polyrhythms. Performers face each other on opposite ends of the setup while hocketing rhythms and melodies through different sections of the work, each with its own energy and mood. Both players have two concert toms, a wood slat, and a set of three crotales while sharing a concert bass drum, snare drum (with splash cymbal resting on the head), bongos, and tuned metal pipes. The variety of textures and colors in this remarkably compact setup makes the piece feel large in scope. Motion No. 7 is a hearty undertaking that will certainly reward the performers while leaving an impression on their audience!
