Review
This trio calls for three snare drums (high, medium, and low) and three woodblocks (high, medium and low). Written in 3/4 throughout, each part continuously alternates between snare drum and wood block. Given the slow tempo (quarter = 58), playing the many unison rhythms together may be one of the most difficult aspects of this piece. The composer provides helpful performance suggestions in the preface. He includes suggestions regarding stick selection, placement of instruments, and a description of how the snare drum should sound and a means of achieving that sound. Yes Open the Door is full of gradual and sudden dynamic changes. In addition, it is an excellent composition to develop one's sense of sixteenth-note division. This piece is appropriate for a wide range of performers from middle school through college level. Highly recommended. - Cort McClaren, August 1991[1]
