Annotations

A piece that is reminiscent of Variations on Japanese Children’s Songs or Dream of the Cherry Blossoms. This piece features some of the same notational writing as the pieces mentioned before. Opening with a short prelude featuring open to closed chord structures as well as short accelerandos, the piece then descends into more traditional Abe writing, as an ostinato marked at fortissimo and Con energico thrusts the piece into a quick forward motion. As with many Abe pieces, it is important to bring out the melodic notes that are playing against the ostinato. An extended technique is introduced of playing the bars with the mallet shafts, and distinguishing between playing with mallet heads and the shafts. A brief cadenza that harkens back to the original mood of the piece occurs after the con energico, and after the cadenza, the performer is required to play similar material to the energico section, only faster. This section after the cadenza pushes the piece to fine. Evelyn Glennie can be heard playing this piece on her CD: Wind in the Bamboo Grove.
