Review

This is a reworking for percussion sextet of Mr. Finney's 1965 quartet of the same name, the latter of which is still available from the publisher. A piece for professional or advanced college ensemble, this version, essentially the same music as the original, still retains much of the quartet texture in that often only four people play, albeit not always the same four. Multiple percussion problems are simplified by means of wider distribution of instruments, some change in tabliture, and careful editing of instrument and stick designations. The sextet version, especially if conducted, should be easier to play and rehearse than the conductorless quartet which assigns more instruments per person and depends on interaction and individual time keeping for ensemble precision; however, the visual effect of the new version will be more formal and less active for these same reasons. - Fred Fairchild, January 1981[1]
