Review

Serenade to a Sand Dune is a work in Latin style, and scored for six players. This composition, containing Beguine/Bolero type rhythms, would make an excellent addition to a percussion pops concert, or as a lighter work on an ensemble program. The work is an excellent piece for younger ensembles because it is of only moderate difficulty (Grade III). Three players (vibes, xylophone and marimba) must use four mallets in places, but the parts are extremely easy, being chordal and repetitious. The melody contains sustained notes in the bells and vibes, while the chordal accompaniment is scored on the wooden bar instruments and occasionally vibes. The Serenade opens with the melodic (bar percussion) instruments followed by a contrasting section with rhythm instruments and driving to a climactic ending in a fast 2/4 meter with a return of the mallet instruments. A score is included with the parts. -- David P. Eyler, April 1984[1]
