Program Notes

The percussion music of Alan Hovhaness helped to develop an exotic trend in the United States using music from the world cultures. Hovhaness and Lou Harrison were pioneers in this trend. October Mountain joins other Hovhaness works such as Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints for Xylophone and Orchestra and Bacchanale in creating a rich tapestry of percussion repertoire.

October Mountain was written while Hovhaness was a student at Tanglewood in 1942.
