John King (born November 28, 1953 in Minneapolis) is an American composer , guitarist and violist .
King studied at the California Institute of the Arts until 1976 with Morton Subotnick , Leonard Stone , James Tenney and Stephen Mosko . Since 1985, he works with John Cage until his death, as a composer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (MCDC). From 1999 to 2003 he was a music curator of the New York cultural center The Kitchen , from 2003 to 2012 he was co-director of the Music Committee of the MDCD and David Behrman , Takehisa Kosugi and Christian Wolff one of the four musicians of the company. From 1982 to 1997 he taught atHe has been teaching music history at New York University since 2003 and composition and digital music at Dartmouth College since 2012 .
In addition to chamber music, works for electronic music, ballet music and choral works King also composed three operas: Herzstück / heartpiece based on a text by Heiner Müller (with Krzysztof Knittel ), premiered at the Warsaw Autumn in 1999 , la belle captive after a text by Alain Robbe-Grillet , premiered at the Teatro Colón in 2003 and Dice Thrown after Stéphane Mallarmé , premiered at the New York City Opera in 2008. As a composer, he worked with experimental musicians such as David Tudor , Gordon Mumma , Christian Wolffand Takehisa Kosugi together.
