Lathon Jernigan (DMA, The University of Texas; MM and BM in piano performance, Southern Methodist University). Dr. Jernigan is chair of the Theory/Composition Division of the School of Music at the University of Northern Iowa. Dr. Jernigan was a piano student of György Sándor, a conducting student of the late Pierre Monteux, a composition student of Hunter Johnson, and a theory student of Francis Keyser in Chicago. Since coming to UNI in 1971, Dr. Jernigan has been active as a conductor (Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra for two seasons; numerous musical shows at the Waterloo Community Playhouse and at Theatre UNI; and a series of faculty concerts devoted to chamber music of the 20th century). He has also been active at the keyboard: fourteen years as principal keyboard in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra; twenty five years as Music Director/Organist at the United Church of Christ in Cedar Falls; as a chamber musician and accompanist for faculty recitals and for the Metropolitan Chorale. His published compositions include a percussion ensemble for nine players, a symphonic cantata for tenor solo, mixed chorus and orchestra, and a brass quintet. Other works include a fanfare for fifteen brass and percussion players, a collection of trio settings for organ, and many instrumental arrangements. He has also been commissioned to compose a work for wind ensemble[1]
