Program Notes
Face Off was commissioned in 2005 by Mike Parola who was teaching at Lynn University’s Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton. It was conceived as a friendly competition between two percussionists. Each of the players has a unique set up which is complementary to the other -- one plays vibes, the other marimba, one plays bongos and congas, the other timbales -- and then they share a tom set up. Each player begins on the instruments unique to their set up and gradually move towards the shared set of toms as the piece progresses. The competition heats up as they come face-to-face on the toms. A motor rhythm of sixteenth notes kicks in. Motives and lines are created with accents, dynamics and different tom pitches. As an added bit of fun within the final section, competition is created with synchronized choreography between both percussionists. - Andrew Houchins
