Program Notes

The title "Commuter Music" is ironic, at best, as this piece couldn't be further from background, muzak-type sounds. The piece was composed for Arraymusic's Young Composer's Workshop. During the workshop I spent a lot of time on the highway or on the train commuting into the city, dealing with the frustrations of traffic, or seeing the tired faces trying to sleep on the train home after work. I could never help feeling a great sense of irony at having the sounds of the ensemble workshopping my piece stuck in my head the whole time, sometimes even working on the piece on the train, all the while surrounded by the mind-numbing endlessness of suburbia...
