Program Notes

Jorge Montilla is internationally considered one of the best clarinetists in Latin-America and one of the world’s best Eb Clarinet players. Montilla is one of the many fine musicians produced by Venezuela’s “El Sistema.”. El Sistema is a state foundation which oversees Venezuela's 125 youth orchestras. Mr. Montilla’s clarinet teachers have included Valdemar Rodríguez, Mark Friedman, Howard Klug. Additional studies were made with Luis Rossi, Walter Boeykens, Antony Pay, Jonathan Cohler and Ricardo Morales

Clarimba was a commission by eight college clarinet professors in the US including Dr. McConkie, Emporia State University. The piece was finished in early February of 2013 and was premiered at “Clarimania” in Poland later that year. The piece is styled around a “joropo” - a musical style resembling the waltz, and an accompanying dance, having African and European influences, originating in Venezuela. The Spanish word “joropo” originally meant “a party”, but now it’s more associated with this dance. The joropo became the national dance of Venezuela in 1882. This piece is in 3/4 time and moves like a waltz which is the key feature to this dance.
