The syllables sung by the soprano are derived from three Korean words: Uhmuhni ("mother"-the work is dedicated to the composer's mother), Arirang (a Korean folk song which is quoted by the chimes), and Na-mu-a-mi-ta-bul (from the Buddhist chant).
