Review

This intermediate sextet is scored for xylophone, snare drum, tenor drum, hand cymbals/suspended cymbal/triangle, bass drum/tambourine and three timpani. The xylophone part includes a few double stops and an arpeggiated ostinato pattern. The snare drum part includes rimshots and a few flams and ruffs. The tenor drum part includes only two flams. The cymbal part will require accurate damping of 8th notes and the use of triangle beaters on suspended cymbal. The bass drummer will have no technical problems but will need to play accurate afterbeats on both bass drum and tambourine. The timpani part includes a few rolls but no tuning changes (however an "ossia" part is written that could be played with a tuning change from E to high A or--perhaps better--on a fourth drum). The meter is 2/4 at a tempo of quarter = 152. Dynamics range from ppp to fff with a few subito changes. The composition style is straight-forward but does include a few passages of hocketing. The score and parts are clearly marked with all necessary performance directions. This is a short but exciting piece that will challenge any intermediate ensemble with its speed, need for precise single-stroke technique and a wide dynamic range. - John Baldwin (August 1996)
