As far back as I can remember, show bands and drum marching bands have played a central role in my life. I have been participating in Showband Antonius since I was 7 years old; first as a percussionist, later as a trombonist (internal training). It wasn't until I was 12 that I started taking lessons at the music school in Brunssum: piano, electronic organ and percussion. During high school it became clear that I wanted to continue in music professionally and so I applied for admission to the Maastricht Conservatory. Here I studied school music, orthopedagogical music and electronic keyboard instruments, with trombone as a minor. During my conservatory studies I started teaching drum marching bands. During this period I also started writing arrangements and compositions for this, simply because the requested music was not available from regular publishers. After the conservatory, I was active for quite some time as a music teacher at various music schools and secondary schools. I also took a PABO course in the evenings. During this period I also started my company Music Design Brunssum with the first goal of custom arranging. In the meantime, virtually all musical activities fall under this company, such as: arrangements, workshops, guest conducting, choreographies, marching parades and also studio work. As a choreographer I am active both in my own association (Showband Antonius Brunssum) and abroad. In 2001, the project “MARCHINGPARADE; a new future for marching band” commissioned by the W.M.C. established. This was the first project in which I was involved “externally” as a choreographer and its aim was to promote the “marching parade”. In 2002 I wrote and rehearsed the show for Taptoe Breda for the Royal Army Fanfare Corps, as well as the marching parade for Show Corps Wilhelmina Sleeuwijk (music and choreography). I am currently working at the André Rieu Studios in Maastricht as a music coordinator. With my own company and instructor at Showband Antonius Brunssum, I can probably call myself one of the lucky ones who has turned his hobby into his profession.
