Program Notes
Make a Joyful Noise was commissioned by Vista Ridge High School Percussion Ensemble for the group’s 2018 PASIC showcase concert. The piece is notated for nine percussionists, one pianist, and a group of clappers unspecified in number. I became a father in 2018, and my son has opened my mind and heart to so many things. His presence has put things in perspective for me from both a professional and personal standpoint, and he has brought abundant joy to me and my family. Make a Joyful Noise attempts to capture this joy, and is my first composition in this new stage of my life.
Program Notes
Outside of marimba concertos, percussionists do not have a ton of literature for marimba with piano accompaniment. To remedy this issue, I thought it would be fun to revisit some of my most popular percussion ensemble works and create reductions of sorts, giving the primary themes to the marimba. Additionally, we have put so much energy into writing 4-mallet solos that we have neglected our 2-mallet playing. These bite-sized pieces span a myriad of styles, techniques, moods, and tempi, so they are appropriate for any number of performance situations – from lessons to studio classes to recitals.
Program Notes
This book encloses ten short solo pieces for marimba, which vary between very easy to moderate. These songs are composed for young beginners starting to learn the four-mallet-technique. The similarity of this music is in the tonality, the easy understandable form and in relatively short time span these songs are written in. Also each song deal with one or two technical problems which are introduced systematically. The songs 1-5 are written for technical education whilst the piece 6-10 are very suitable for concert performances for students.
Program Notes
Meant to be a musical representation of the many colorful images one would experience along a flight to an unknown destination, Sky Music by Sarah Santa Cruz uses an accompanying low-brass octet to provide a warm background and additional melodic depth to the seven-member percussion group that carries the overall ensemble. This unique instrumentation is one of the numerous contradictory elements of this diverse piece. Others include soaring lines and rooted ones, frenetic figures and calm ones, and lush lines and stark ones. Together, this variety allows for personal interpretations as varied as the sky. Sky Music was commissioned by the Cedar Ridge High School Low Brass Ensemble for their performance at Midwest Clinic 2013 and the Cedar Ridge Percussion Ensemble for their performance at TMEA2014.

Performance Notes
* Number of Players on each brass part is flexible
* Marimba 1 and Marimba 4 can share a 5-octave marimba.
* Two or more cymbals should be used
Description
Montauk is a hauntingly evocative piece that draws its inspiration from the poignant narrative of Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Through a delicate interplay of melancholic melodies and minimalistic fragments, the piece explores the profound sense of loss and emotional disintegration one might experience when cherished memories are forcibly erased. The music weaves a sonic tapestry that reflects the turbulence of a mind grappling with the fading fragments of love and connection, ultimately leaving listeners with a resonant and haunting impression of the fragility of human memory and the enduring, bittersweet nature of the past.
Description
Lucid Mantra by Dustin Schulze is a 13-player percussion ensemble piece inspired by jazz and funk. The piece has a very syncopated texture, featuring a running 16th-note groove throughout, and has a consistent pocket of rhythm that carries the entire piece. The use of metals overtop the running 16th-note syncopated rhythms creates a dreamy quality, underscored by a rhythm section consisting of piano and drum set.
Description
Starlight is my first solo work that is fully chorale-based, with chorale rolls making up the majority of the work. As a solo creator of music and online content, I often get caught up in deadlines and other projects and forget to take some time to go outside.

Nowadays, I will often go to a quiet place at night, sit down and admire the stars to remind myself of three things - how small my problems and I are, how lucky I am to have wonderful people in my life and most importantly, how peaceful and warm things can become when you take a moment to enjoy the shining of the stars.

Starlight captures this warmth through the player's own interpretation and manipulation of roll speed to bring out the melodic separation and leading voices. The melody is simple and clear, but becomes transformed both in key (from F major to D major) and in style (alternating between chorale rolls and non-rolled sections), signifying the ever-changing nature of stars in their alignment and appearance.

Starlight was commissioned by Marimbafest Australia and premiered by Adam Tan on Friday 7th July 2023 at Marimbafest 2023, where it was the Compulsory Work for the OPEN CLASS Solo Category.
Review
Sudden Change is a multiple percussion solo based on sudden free change of meters, rhythm, dynamics and sound colors. The solo is presented in sections and are based on influences such as Take Five, Ratzenitzza and the Jongo from Brazil. Instrumentation includes bass drum, 2 toms, 2 bongos, hi-hat and 5 temple blocks. Technical demands include flams, drags and counter rhythms between the hands. Mallet changes and instrument changes are clearly indicated. The solo is 6 pages in length, but the editor has taken care that all page turns are at rests providing time for the turns. The composer suggests that all accents be exaggerated. An excellent multiple percussion solo and highly recommended. - George Frock, February 1994
Timpani

Description
Etude 111 covers different musical and technical aspects of high level timpani playing. It is divided into three parts: <br/>
Part One is focusing on relaxed and easy movements of both hands and arms in order to train virtuoso independent playing. Depending on the technical skills, the player should try to play the left kettle drum with the left and the right with the right hand if possible. If sixteenth notes can not be articulated precisely with one hand it is recommended to play hand by hand. The use of wooden sticks creates a pizzicato-like sound.<br/>
In Part Two the rhythmic structures of the beginning are transferred from two to four instruments, which widely extends the spectrum of intervals. This allows plenty of musical lines, particularly through the use of pedals. Flannel mallets both improve the quality of sound and the exact articulation. “Sticking “ can be chosen individually. <br/>
Part Three puts emphasis on a differentiated playing of the roll. The precise beginning or ending of a roll, with accent or without, the musical development of crescendo and decrescendo, the legato playing over several timpani and/or the speed of tremolo are some of the basics for a high level interpretation.<br/>
Description
Growing up in the 1980s in a small rural town in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky, I lived on 6th Street. I have so many wonderful childhood memories of that street, like riding my bicycle until the streetlights came on (the universal signal it was time to head back home for the day) or that first time setting off on an adventure behind the wheel of my parents' car. This piece is a tribute to that time in my life and that little town.
2. Since there are no open hi hat parts, feel free to lock the hi hat in the closed position.<br/>
3. The Bass Drum part can be played on any bass drum (concert, marching or kick drum on its side). Lay a towel or cloth across the head and play a hard felt or marching bass drum mallet.<br/>
4. If you use the floor tom part, lay a tower or cloth across the head and play with hard felt timpani mallets or something similar.<br/>
Description
In When Worlds Collide, the title couldn’t be more fitting. The multifaceted Rick Dior creates a mash up of numerous cultures and musical styles. If played in its entirety, the total duration of the piece lasts around 20 minutes. At its core, When Worlds Collide is a groove-base composition containing several aspects of the World Music genre. Improvisation also plays a large role throughout the piece which can be configured to feature one or more soloists. (It would also be a great vehicle for featuring guest artists!) The parts in this composition vary in skill level from rather basic to quite advanced. It can be treated as a solo feature for a talented drumset player or as a feature for the director performing on vibraphone and drumset. There’s plenty of room to make it your own and tailor it to the strengths of your own group.
Program Notes
When Dillon Lewis approached Joe Moore about writing a piece for me, he was completely open to the commission and ideas I had for it. The title of the piece is a direct quote from the novel and feature film “Mary Poppins.” In the story, the two children ask Mary, “How long will you stay with us? What will we ever do without you?” Mary replies, “I shall stay until the wind changes.” My grandmother, Ann Schneider, who sadly passed away about three years ago, was the inspiration for this piece. She is my greatest musical inspiration and continues to inspire me to do what I do every day. She loved Disney and she especially loved backyard wind chimes. My family and I continue to mourn her loss; it has been very hard for us to let go. Nobody was ready for the “wind to change.”

This short three-movement work opens with a calm introduction to the instruments and, especially, a large set of backyard wind chimes. These chimes, along with the rest of the instruments, are played softly until we hear the wind change in the second movement. This movement is played entirely on a glockenspiel and has many running passages, representing the movement of the wind. This explodes into the third movement, which is played mostly on the percussion set-up. This movement represents the feeling of hesitation to the wind changing until the very end, in which the performer slowly lets go of the music, allowing the sound of the wind chimes to completely dissipate.
dols of an Ancient God was a long-term project that was completed and performed in Spring of 2022. The work explores the soundscape and timbres that comes with a very large percussion ensemble. Through this project, I tried capturing a darker side of this instrumentation through eerie dissonance and heavy orchestration. The work is programmatic and tells the story of an adventurer who stumbles across something almost unholy. Hopefully, as the piece moves along, you can notice a series of things start to feel more and more out of control. There is no certainty if you choose to grip Idols of an Ancient God.
3. Careful mallet selection is important in maximizing ensemble balance and blend. For xylophone, a softer rubber or cord(vibe) mallet will keep the tone and volume more characteristic of the piece.<br/>
Program Notes
Veteran percussionist and composer Brian Slawson may have just created the catchiest tune on your next concert. Whether for younger middle school groups, or an encore piece for more advanced groups, Jokers Wild is a Vaudville-style circus piece that’s sure to bring the house down! Jokers Wild is as adaptable as it is entertaining. Playable as a trio (xylophone & basic 4-mallet marimba & percussion), it’s also expandable through optional parts that can reach thirteen or more players! Listed in the score is an order of priority for adding extra parts to the trio – a kind of “choose your own adventure” approach to building the ensemble.
Program Notes
Carol of the Bells by Mykola Leontovych is a classic holiday piece with a gorgeous melody that seems to stick in everyone's head. Eric Rath has taken that piece and arranged it for percussion ensemble - 11 to 14 players, playing a modernized version of the piece, with some more "pop-music-ish" chord progressions and an optional bass guitar.

This piece is a blast to perform, and is absolutely perfect for holiday concerts - give your percussionists a chance to have fun and to shine during the holidays!

Description
Rooted by Brian Blume is a contemporary, advanced percussion solo with audio track accompaniment inspired from Blume’s personal reflection on life, the changes he has undergone, and the pillars that have remained constant. The piece musically embodies these concepts with recurring harmonic and melodic language along with rhythmic motifs that appear in various altered and unaltered states.

Written for two snare drums (one a muted, prepared drum) and glockenspiel, the piece marries many facets of Blume’s musical upbringing. The snare drum portions of the piece undergo numerous treatments from orchestral to rudimental and sometimes something in between. This provides a rich canvas for the performer to explore interpretation, touch, and tone.

The piece begins with whimsical, orchestral snare drum playing before ramping up into a more aggressive rudimental style. The middle of the piece is constructed of three components, including an interactive glockenspiel passage with the audio track, a bold and exuberant snare drum cadenza, and a disorienting snare drum section. Finally, the piece concludes with a flurry of blended orchestral and rudimental snare drum passages that propel the piece to the end.
Description
…And the Earth Melted Into the Sun is about the imagery of the giant mass of the Earth cascading into the Sun and vanishing as if nothing was ever there. This piece is for a large percussion ensemble. It was written for the Ohio Northern University Percussion Ensembles under the direction of Dr. Sarah Waters. She was one of the biggest influences on my musical career, so this piece is dedicated to my very last concert performing under her instruction. This piece shows exactly what her personality and teaching philosophy shows: everyone can play together and make music in harmony no matter what the conditions are. In such a small school, there is a desire for musicians to play, whether they are music majors or not. This is dedicated to the strong percussion program she holds and to her phenomenal efforts in the percussion community through Ohio Northern University.
A Sky Full of Stars, is a piece for 12 percussionists. Each of us is a Star in the Sky. Because of music, we are connected. Different Stars like our tutors and ourselves connected and handed down from generation to generation.

Review
Composer Heng Liu states, “Each of us is a star in the sky. Because of music, we are connected. Different stars, like our tutors and ourselves, (are) connected and handed down from generation to generation.” These sentiments are reflected in Liu’s composition, as individual musical fragments appear discreetly and are combined gradually over the course of this 10-minute work. The harmonies are largely tonal throughout, creating a complex web of sound characterized by interlocking rhythms across the ensemble. The final section of the piece features unison statements from non-pitched instruments with the keyboard percussion instruments executing repetitive figures whose counterpoint almost invokes a Steve Reich-like texture on a grand scale. Liu offers two codas from which the conductor can choose: one ending softly and the other loud.

While the scoring is dense, especially in later sections of the piece, all parts are idiomatically written to be playable by intermediate to early-advanced players. Four-mallet writing is chordal (either as block or broken chords) with the exception of a brief passage featuring an eighthnote melody and accompaniment in one of the marimba parts. Many of the non-pitched parts are unison or easily coordinated with the aid of a conductor.

“A Sky Full of Stars” would make a good “cornerstone” piece on an intermediate/advanced college percussion ensemble concert. In addition to the programmatic beauty of the music, it will provide a strong vehicle for ensemble playing and listener engagement.
Description
Slide is a quasi-minimalistic work scored for percussion orchestra. Throughout the piece, driving repeated rhythms produce a choral effect of long sustained phrases. The title of the piece refers at the same time to smooth, continuous motion and also falling or sliding gestures (resonator and timpani glissandi and descending chromatic runs for example). Slide was composed as a companion piece for my percussion orchestra work “Surfacing.” Slide begins in the same sonic world and then proceeds to fixate for the rest of the piece on the plagal cadence at the end of Surfacing.

My toddler loves going down slides on the playground, and I am sure in a year or so my infant twins will too. There is something so beautiful about how effortlessly and happily a child goes down a slide after the hard work of climbing the stairs to get there. I’ve found it to be apt metaphor for music: after the work of an arduous period of preparation a performance is the effortless and joyful reward (as long as the preparation is true).

Slide is dedicated to my three children Ariadne, Emily, and Porter; and composed for my “other kids”: the 2016 UNL Percussion Ensemble for their showcase concert at the 2016 Percussive Arts Society International Convention.
Description
John Herndon’s Begin Transmission is an exciting work for percussion ensemble designed for students with about one year of experience. The mallet keyboard parts primarily feature step-wise motion and lay very comfortably in the key of D-minor while the Chimes and Timpani provide harmonic impact. In most cases, rhythms are comprised of quarter notes and eighth notes.
The piece is written for 13 players but fear not! Smaller groups can omit certain specified parts (down to 8 players) or alternately, larger groups can double or even triple parts for an exciting, percussive spectacle. This work provides a great platform for young performers to apply the skills and concepts learned in beginning percussion literature. Let the transmission begin

Description
Flat Circle by John Kosch is written for four players sharing a single 4.3-octave (low A) marimba. Designed for developing percussionists beginning to explore four-mallet technique, the piece uses double vertical strokes and comfortable intervals (mainly 4ths and 5ths) as well as a repeated sticking permutation found across all four parts.

Two performers play from each side of the marimba—an increasingly popular setup that conserves stage space and encourages ensemble awareness. The writing keeps the “backwards” players primarily on the upper manual to simplify pitch navigation while still creating engaging musical interplay.
Description
Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Mahoning Valley in Ohio rose as one of America’s great steel-producing regions. Major companies such as Youngstown Sheet and Tube—founded in 1900 & later the largest corporation in Ohio— along with Republic Steel and U.S. Steel, transformed the valley into a manufacturing powerhouse. The mills ran day & night, their towering smokestacks & glowing furnaces defining the skyline & fueling an industrial boom that shaped daily life for generations. Thousands of residents, including members of my own family, labored in the mills, producing the steel that built our nation and defended it in times of war. Yet alongside this world of heat and clamor, Mill Creek Park—Ohio’s first metropolitan park—offered a peaceful counterpoint, with its natural beauty & quiet standing in stark contrast to the roar of blast furnaces & the thundering of the rolling mills. Forged in Rhythm seeks to capture these dual rhythms of the past—the power of industry and the solace of nature—that together shaped the spirit of the Mahoning Valley.
Overview
It begins with tips about how to practice well. It discusses how to hold the sticks and the proper stance at a snare drum. Then it introduces how to read and count music. First, there are a few exercises and then a piece of music. This is how the rest of the book is organized: It introduces a concept (quarter notes, eighth notes, accents, dynamics), provides exercises to practices each concept, and then a piece of music which includes the learned concept. It also provides pages with all the dynamic markings, note values, time signatures, and common sticking patterns so one is supplied with a reference of each. At the end, Tom Morgan cleverly adds 14 pages of his next book, A Sequential Approach to Rudimental Snare Drum, to provide a hint of what the next steps are to learning to play snare drum.
Reviews
Review by Ashley Feist: I think this book is a great way to start a beginning snare drummer. I recommend it for all ages, but the concepts are explained quickly, in short paragraphs rather than taking the time to be really through and detailed. Therefore, this may be for ages 12 and up, quick learners, or someone who already has a basic understanding of how music/rhythm works. Rating- I
Description
Voyager by Francisco Perez is a light-hearted percussion ensemble work inspired by the life of Perez's beloved dog, Charles. As a programmatic depiction of his average day during the summer, this work is comprised of five episodes which musically illustrate everything from his lazy mornings to his exhilarating evening car rides.
This 12 player ensemble captures the joyful escapades that are synonymous with a happy pup. The subject matter of the piece easily translates to middle or high school students and provides ample opportunities to identify the various sections of the piece with Charles' daytime shenanigans. Perez has woven heroic melodies, driving rhythms, and catchy Soca patterns throughout that will instantly connect with students and audiences.
Appropriate for run-out concerts, tour performances, or for a "front of curtain" selection to open your percussion ensemble concert, this creative exploration of metallic percussive sound is entertaining for audiences and performers alike.
Program Notes
Babylon was commissioned by the Texas Christian University Percussion Orchestra, Brian West, conductor. The piece is programmatic and is inspired by the story of “The Tower of Babel” from the chapter of Genesis of the Bible:

Genesis 11:1-9
Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel - because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

The piece is divided into three sections that follow the story, Land of Shinar, Tower to Heaven, and Confusion of Language, each with its own theme. The Land of Shinar theme is built upon a sequence of chromatic mediant chordal progressions. Tower to Heaven features a rising theme using mostly rising fourth/descending fifth chord progressions. Confusion of Language is a 12-tone row and the section features difference variants of the row (inversion, retrograde, retrograde inversion) and different permutations to emulate the confusion of languages.

The Tower to Heaven theme cycles throughout the whole work. Deviating somewhat from the original story of Babylon, the “tower theme” emerges from the Confusion of Language section as a reminder of the infamous structure built by the people of Shinar before they were scattered throughout the earth. The piece ends as mystically and quietly as it began.

Description
Beginning in the 15th century timpani were employed to capture an audience’s attention. Whether for an announcement, event or concert, paired with brass instruments in a fanfare or in an orchestral setting as a solo, the combination of rhythm and pitch at the heart of the instruments have been a useful tool for composers throughout music history. Incorporated in this solo are excerpted portions of the following pieces that are well known for using the timpani as a vehicle for heraldic moments in the music: “Alsosprach Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss, Symphony No. 9 (mvmt. II) by Ludwig van Beethoven, “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland, “Bugler’s Dream” by Leo Arnaud, “Olympic Fanfare and Theme” by John Williams and “Hallelujah Chorus” from Messiah by George Frideric Handel.
Program Notes
This gem from Grainger comes from his early years. It was composed in 1911 for piano and strings. He orchestrated it for different genres throughout his career, with a two-piano four-hands version orchestrated in 1947. This arrangement is based on the piano version. Grainger claimed the music seemed to reflect the famous Handel in London while he was visiting and later settled in beginning in 1712. The Strand is a street in London containing many theaters, and Handel composed much of his music there.
Program Notes
Dedicated to Robert Hohner and the Central Michigan University Percussion Ensemble, Paschal Dances is based on the first two lines of the famous Gregorian Easter sequence, "Victim paschali laudes" (Praises to the Paschal Victim). Motives and phrases of the chant are used to unify the work which comprises an Invocation, 4 Dances, 2 Interludes, and a Benediction. In the opening Invocation, the first phrase of the chant tune is played by the orchestra bells and consequently, the first five notes are harmonized by the marimba. The glockenspiel play both phrases of the first line of the chant at the close of the section. Dance I, in fast tempo, is dominated by membrane instruments with interjections of the second line of the chant tune being played by keyboard instruments. The section segues into the first Interlude, characterized by bowed vibraphone and a dirge-like presentation of the first five notes of the chant in the piano. Following, in the same slow tempo, is Dance II, which features chanting of male voices in canon on each of the three phrases comprising the second line of the chant. The first phrase of the chant undergoes metamorphosis in Dance III, becoming a whole-tone configuration. The dance is set in a lively 6/8 meter with periodic episodes of duplets against the triplet division. At midpoint, the dance breaks into quadruple meter with the first phrase of the chant played by the vibraphone moving in triplets. The dance returns to 6/8 meter and elides with the second Interlude, in slow tempo, where fragments of the chant are heard in the glockenspiels, chimes and marimba. Following a brief silence, Dance IV ensues with the marimbas elaborating on the whole-tone motive used in Dance III. In very fast tempo, the movement climaxes on a glorious G-flat major chord, which also articulates the beginning of the Benediction. Accompanied by all mallet instruments playing the motive of the first phrase of the chant in different rhythms, the piano, along with voices, state a haunting motive derived from the second line of the chant. The work ends with three tolls of a "questioning" chord, with each articulation followed by an arpeggiated version of the chord in the upper register of the piano.
Description
According to Sir Isaac Newton, the “aether” was a medium which permeated all of space, which enabled all light and energy to traverse through it. In his piece for percussion ensemble Aether, Francisco Perez attempts to encapsulate this concept through the use of bright and shimmering instruments like crotales, glockenspiel, vibraphones, triangle and chimes. Although the piece is meant to portray the nebulous aspects of the universe, there is a deep underlying group present in the piece, largely due to the ad lib. djembe part. Aether was commissioned by William Register and the Ashley Ridge High School Percussion Ensemble.

Review
Marilyn K. Clark Silva's Writing:

Aether starts out with intriguing ethereal sounds, such as crystal glass and bowed vibraphone. It then gradually builds up to the driving thematic motion that makes up the meat of the piece. The individual parts are not incredibly challenging for the ability level, but the composite effect is pleasing and would likely be exciting and satisfying for a high school or young undergraduate group to learn. The piece has a similar feel and similar elements as a winter drumline show, and as such would be a great concert season piece for percussion students to work on and develop their skills on the court/field. The piece has several ostinato parts and syncopated parts, and it incorporates such extended techniques as dead strokes and dampening. The mallet parts have a few challenging runs and some four-mallet chords.

Aether calls for three vibraphones and four marimbas, in addition to a few specialized percussion instruments like crotales and djembe, which may not be available to every ensemble. While the piece makes an effort to be accessible to variable sizes of ensembles, it requires a fairly well-stocked instrument inventory. For a large high school percussion program looking for a new concert piece with enough rhythmic drive and cool effects to engage the students, this piece would be an excellent choice.
Description
Paul Smadbeck's Rhythm Song is one of the most popular solo marimba works of all time and has been re-engraved in a clearer, easier to read and understand, composer-approved edition. Elements of African, Latin, Gamelan and Jazz Fusion. Can be performed as an unaccompanied solo or with any number of doublings in unison or at the octaves. Great for marimbistic get-togethers when several players know the work. Recorded by the composer and Evelyn Glennie.
Blunder and Thazes by Larry Lawless is a fun, circus piece for 12 percussionists. The opening theme (marked "Tempo di Clown Car") is based on the well-known circus tune "Thunder and Blazes" (also known as "Entry of the Gladiators") by Julius Fucik. In addition to covering all the sound effects, the 12th player is instructed to leave the stage for a while and then return in a clown costume performing a circus act
